Ikeniwa Residence
Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA
Ikeniwa, “Pond Garden” in Japanese, is a serene retreat where modern design meets heritage-inspired architecture. Conceived by designer and owner Emily Yang Bauer, the home blends the elegance of historic Asian gardens with the modern sophistication of I.M. Pei, creating a tranquil sanctuary in nature.
The open-concept living area frames ocean views through floor-to-ceiling windows, extending onto an indoor-outdoor terrace that fills the space with light, fresh air, and reflections from the central pond—ideal for both gatherings and quiet reflection.
On the lower level, the primary suite features a fireplace, en-suite with double sinks and walk-in shower, and direct access to the pond garden. A sleek guest room offers a floating desk overlooking the water. Upstairs, a versatile double bedroom sits near the kitchen and living area, while a separate ADU includes a king bed, full kitchen, and spacious living area with pond and ocean views.
Courtyards of maple and cherry trees, Japanese dry gardens, and three carved stone lion heads create harmony throughout the property. With its blend of nature, cultural heritage, and minimalistic elegance, Ikeniwa is a rare place to gather, entertain, or simply immerse in serenity.
Size: Approx. 2,400 sq. ft.
